Concealed Weapons Permit  The process is easier than you think.

The concealed carry permit is administered through your local Sheriff's office.  In California, the Sheriff and his staff are required to follow strict state and local guidelines when performing the necessary background checks for issuing Concealed Carry Weapon licenses. Due to the detailed nature involved with conducting these background checks, appointment times and processing times can take multiple weeks. During the application process, the applicant will be asked to schedule an interview appointment for a new Concealed Carry Weapon license. Please note that for a new Concealed Carry Weapon license a non-refundable application fee will be required to reserve an appointment for an interview.

In 2023, California’s legislature passed SB 2 into law. This bill brought significant changes to the CCW licensing process in the state of California. Many of these required changes forced licensing agencies (in this case, the Sheriff’s Office) to spend significantly more resources to process each application. For our agency, these changes included the following:

  • Conducting social media checks for all applicants
  • Contacting three personal references for each applicant
  • Implementing a new CCW permit system that includes DMV checks, updated photos, and fingerprints
  • Verifying that all firearms listed on the permit are registered to the applicant
  • Ensuring all firearms instructors are certified by the Department of Justice
  • Expanding the requirements for permit renewals, including full Live Scan processing for every permit renewal (starting September 1, 2026)

In order to implement the changes required by this policy while maintaining cost neutrality, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has approved an updated fee schedule for CCW license processing.

Effective July 22, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office fees for CCW license processing shall be as follows:

After you have been contingently approved by the CCW Committee, you will be asked to complete the Live Scan (DOJ Fingerprint Background Checks) at one of our facilities to initiate the DOJ/FBI background checks. The DOJ fingerprint background check fees range from $93-$115 + Live Scan service fee.
